چکیده

Oral biofilms play a major role in the etiology of oral diseases, and have broad implications for quality of life, systemic health and economic costs. Hypotheses regarding the mechanisms by which oral biofilms exert their pathogenic potential have evolved over time. Early theories in which oral diseases were associated solely with the quantity of colonizing biofilms have been replaced by the understanding that emergence of specific pathogenic microorganisms may lead to diseases. New insights into the structure and composition of oral microbial communities have implicated shifts in the composition of the resident microbiota in the development of oral diseases. Improved knowledge about the factors involved in the etiology of oral diseases has resulted in a refinement of traditional approaches for the control of oral biofilms and spurred the development of new preventive and therapeutic strategies. This volume of Periodontology 2000 provides an indepth analysis of current beliefs regarding the structure and composition of oral biofilm communities, microbial shifts associated with oral health and disease, transmission of oral pathogens, and technologies for the assessment of complex microbial communities. Trends in the prevalence of oral biofilm-associated diseases and their implications are discussed, and approaches to the control of oral biofilms are critically appraised.

نقش بیوفیلم باکتریایی در پیامدهای بالینی ناشی از عفونت های دهان و دندان

Oral and dental diseases such as dental caries and gingivitis are common problems in human societies. The formation of biofilms is considered as a very important mechanism of disease by these bacteria. The present study is an overview of these infectious diseases and their bacterial etiology, the mechanism of formation and role of dental plaque biofilm in the development of these infections and...

The Pathophysiology of Oral Biofilms and it’s relation to Initial Gum Disease and Caries

This study appraises diverse theoretical concepts into a coherent hypothetical concept of the pathophysiology of oral biofilms. The microbiota, their characteristics and properties are systematically analyzed and mechanisms of maturation clarified. Not all biofilms are the same as its stagnation and progress leads to development of gum disease and/or tooth decay. By deconstructing and assessing...

Acute and substantive action of antimicrobial toothpastes and mouthrinses on oral biofilm in vitro.

The aim of this study was to compare acute action by killing or disrupting oral biofilms through the use of antimicrobial toothpastes and mouthrinses in vitro and to investigate substantive action by absorption of antimicrobials in a biofilm. Biofilms from freshly collected human saliva were grown in 96-well microtitre plates. After removal of saliva, the wells of the microtitre plates were was...
